Gran Canaria: Bandama Crater

De afdaling naar de groene oase en de wandeling op de bodem van de Bandama krater deden we tijdens een vorig verblijf op Gran Canaria. Dus besloten we om deze keer de bovenste kraterrand rondom de vulkaankrater te volgen.

During a previous stay on Gran Canaria we descended to the green oasis and walked on the bottom of the Bandama crater. So we decided to follow this time the upper crater rim around the volcanic crater.

We vonden een parkeerplaats langs de rustige weg tussen het gehuchtje Casa de Bandama en de golfclub. We volgden de weg terug omlaag naar het gehuchtje en komen voorbij het pad dat afdaalt naar de bodem van de krater. Deze keer wandelden we verder naar de T-splitsing, waar we rechts omhoog GC-822 verkeersweg volgen.

We found a parking place along the quiet road between the hamlet of Casa de Bandama and the golf club and walked the road back down to the hamlet, passing by the path that descends to the bottom of the crater. But today time continued to the T-junction, where we follow the GC-822 road uphill to the right.

Ruim 400m verder, waar de GC-802 naar links afbuigt, gaan we rechtsaf een grindpad op en volgen vanaf hier de (wat schaarse) bordjes met 'Camino Borde de la Caldera'. Het pad loopt een stukje parallel aan de GC-802 omlaag en slaat dan scherp rechtsaf. We krijgen de eerste fraaie uitzichten op het noodoosten van het eiland.

After well over 400m, where the GC-802 turns left, we went onto a gravel track and followed from here on the (scarce) signs saying "Camino de la Borde Caldera". The trail runs parallel with the GC-802 and turns sharp to the right to give us the first gorgeous views over the northeast of the island.

Het pad komt dichter bij de kraterrand. Op de volgende splitsing gaan we rechts omhoog langs een pad door de agaven en olijfbomen. Zowat halfweg rond de krater wordt het landschap kaler en het pad smaller en over de korrelige vulkanische ondergrond wat moeilijker begaanbaar en krijgen we enkele korte maar stevige klimmetjes onder de voeten.

The path gets closer to the crater rim and at the next junction we go right up along a good path, with nice olive trees and agaves. Nearly halfway around the crater the landscape is getting more barren, the path narrows and is more exposed and the granular volcanic soil is a bit more difficult to walk on while we get a few short but firm climbs.

Na de afdaling steil omlaag naar het diepste punt in de kraterronde gaat het even steil weer omhoog maar wordt het wel wat gemakkelijker doordat er houten treden zijn aangelegd.

After descending steeply down to the lowest point in the craterrim, it goes equally steep up again. However it is a little bit easier because they have added wooden steps to the trail.

Eerder onverwacht komen we aan de rand van de Bandama Golfbaan en voert een onverharde weg ons naar het Golf Hotel, een mooie plaats om even te rusten met uitzicht over de krater. Aan het hotel kiezen we voor de onverharde baan rechts rond de gebouwen, die ons op een 500-tal meter terug voert naar het asfaltwegeltje waar we de auto achterlieten.

A bit unexpected, we arrived at the borders of the Bandama Golf course. A dirtroad takes us to the Golf Hotel, a nice place to take a rest with a view of the crater. At the hotel we choose the dirt track to the right around the buildings, leading us in about 500m back to the tarmac track where we left the car.

Deze wandeling is niet geschikt voor rol- en kinderwagens en wordt best niet gedaan bij sterke wind. Aan het begin van het parcours en aan de golfclub is er horeca.


This walk is not suitable for wheel chair and strollers and should not be done in strong winds. At the beginning and at the golf club is some catering.
