Gran Canaria: Santa Lucia - Cruz del Siglo

Het leuke stadje Santa Lucia ligt schilderachtig in de brede Caldera de Tirajana. We parkeren op de Plaza en klimmen even de trappen omhoog om de kerk te gaan bekijken. Terug beneden in het parkje gaan we noordoost en volgen de pijl 'Cruz del Siglo' door de Lugar la Florentina langs de rand van het stadje omhoog door een tuinlandschap.

The charming town of Santa Lucia is located picturesquely in the wide Caldera de Tirajana. We park at the Plaza and climb the stairs to have a look at the church. Back down in the park, go northeast and follow the wooden signposts "Cruz del Siglo' up the Lugar la Florentina, along the gardens at the outskirts of the village.

Aan de splitsing gaan we rechts een mooi steegje in, komen voorbij de ruïnes van een molen en blijven de wegwijzer 'Cruz del Siglo' volgen. We lopen linksaf verder omhoog het dorp uit langs wat verwilderde velden.

At the first intersection go to the right into a pretty alley, passing by the ruins of a mill and continue to follow the wooden signposts "Cruz del Siglo". Walk to the left, further uphill and out of the village along the abandoned and overgrown fields.

Aan de volgende splitsing lopen we rechtdoor naar de voet van de voor ons oprijzende rotswand en gaan rechtsaf. Steil slingert het rotsige pad omhoog. Hoe hoger we komen des te smaller worden de haarspeldbochten en des te mooier ook het uitzicht op Santa Lucia in het weidse keteldal.

At the next junction keep going straight ahead to the foot of the towering cliff in front of you. At the T-junction go right. The rocky path steeply winds up the cliff. The higher you get, the more the curves are narrower and the more beautiful also the views of Santa Lucia in the vast caldera.

Onderweg omhoog negeren we de afslag naar de Cueva de la Luna en bereiken na een laatste haarspeldbocht de pas met zijn zachtglooiende, verwilderde landbouwterassen. We houden rechts aan en lopen langs de rand van de helling naar de heuvel met het Cruz del Siglo, waar we even rusten en van het uitzicht genieten. Het sobere 'kruis van de eeuw' werd in 1900 op deze bergtop geplaatst.

On the way up, ignore the path to the Cueva de la Luna to reach, after a last hairpin, the pass with its gently sloping, overgrown and abandoned agricultural terraces. Go to the right and walk along the edge of the slope to the hill with the Cruz del Siglo, a perfect place for a break and to enjoy the view. The sober 'cross of the century' was placed in 1900 on this mountaintop.

De terugweg is eerst gelijk aan de heenweg: het pad met de haarspeldbochten terug omlaag en weeg naar het stadje, maar aan de kruising vlak voor de Molino de Gofio de El Valle gaan we nu linksaf door de schilderachtige steegjes omlaag naar een dwarsweg, waar we rechtsaf gaan.

The return route is at first the same as the way up: the path with hairpin bends down the cliff and the path back to the town, but at the intersection next to the Molino de Gofio the El Valle, go left down the quaint alleyways to a cross road, where you turn right.

Voorbij El Hao, een klein archeologisch museum, komen we op de GC-65 verkeersweg. Rechtsaf voert die ons door een straat met horeca en voorbij het kleine marktgebouwtje terug naar de Plaza aan de voet van de kerk.

Beyond El Hao, the modest archaeological museum, you reach the GC-65 road. To the right it leads us through a street with tavernas and a small market building, back to the Plaza at the foot of the church.

Deze wandeling is niet geschikt voor rol- of kinderwagens.

This hike is not suited for wheel chairs or strollers.
