Itinerary description
Directions: Meklenborg bussholdeplass - Bjørndal idrettspark - Oldtidsveien - Toppen av Grønliåsen - Oldtidsveien - Jettegryte i Grønliåsen - Oldtidsveien - Branntårnet - Bjørndal idrettspark - Meklenborg bussholdeplass
This route provides a short visit to Grønliåsen, passing through some of the most significative points on the hill.
We start at Meklenborg bus stop. Go down the street to the BIF clubhouse and navigate between the soccer fields to the entrance to the forest. From there, follow the forest trail southwards. Soon after the first crossroads, you will need to abandon the main trail and take a path to the right over a swampy area. The path is marked with piles of stones and starts climbing the hill surrounded by a magnificent boreal forest. Shortly before getting to the top ridge of the hill, a relatively wide path crosses our way. Leave the stone-marked path leading to the southwest (directly to the fire tower), and turn to the right. After following the trail northwards for a while, turn to the left and take 'Oldtidsveien' to the top of Grønliåsen.
From the top of Grønliåsen there is a nice view over Bunnefjorden, Nesodden, and the hills to the west from the inner Oslo Fjord. After few meters, you will also find one of the burial sites from the Iron Age that are spread over 'Oldtidsveien'. Follow the blue marks northwards over the ridge of Grønliåsen until turning 180° to the left in a loop to find a giant's cauldron. (Grønliåsen is what is left of a mountain chain eroded and shrunken by the weight of glaciers during the Ice Age). Choose always the wider path to the left, until coming back to 'Oldtidsveien'. Shortly after passing another burial site, you will end up at the fire tower (Branntårnet). Enjoy the view!
Another path marked with piles of stones to the east of the tower will lead you back to the forest trail close to Bjørndal. Turn to the left and follow this trail northwards. After walking few meters, take a path deviating from the forest trail to the right. You will pass behind Bjørndal's ski jump before coming back to the soccer fields.
