Itinerary description
This trail is an easy trail, but absolutely beautiful. Even during a time of very little rain, auch as the summer/fall of 2022, there is lots of green and quite a bit of water rushing down the Rio Genil into the Embalse de Canales.
We parked the car in the parking lot of the Restaurante La Fabriquilla, as the regular parking spaces a little bit further down were unavailable due to construction work. We asked the restaurant owner and he agreed on the condition that we would be back on time before the restaurant closes. Understandable, because he has to close the gate when he leaves.
From here we started our hike on the rail just above the parking lot. It is a very subtle incline upriver on an old railroad track converted into a trail for hikers and bikers. The scenery is stunning, the path is well marked, and there are signs with lots of information on the old railroad along the way. A real treat, indeed.
We walked up to the trailhead of the "Vereda de la Estrella" trail. On the way there you walk through a few tunnels and pass by some amazing looking restaurants. About half-way you get to choose whether you want to stay on the actual railroad track or if you want to deviate a little and take a much narrower trail trail on the other side of the river, over some suspension bridges. Both tracks will take you to the trailhead of the "Vereda de la Estrella", which was where we turned around.
In summer, this is a great spot to hop in the icy cold river right by the Restaurante Barranco de San Juan.
This trail is great to do as a family. There are no dangerous passages, it's very safe to walk with children yet interesting enough, especially the part with the suspension bridges, for them to not get bored. Those people who do not want to do the entire trail, can walk as far as one of the many restaurants, get a drink and wait for the rest of the group to pick them up again.
We had lunch at the Restaurante La Fabriquilla, where we parked the car. That way we felt less guilty about occupying their parking space. And the food was delicious. We did not expect such fine dining at a rural place such as this one. Not cheap, but not at all overpriced considering the quality of the food.
