Path along the ancient limes that once divided Scotland and England, treading the footsteps of the ancient Romans from Newcastle to Bowness: fortresses preserved over the centuries of history draw a path between the hills from sea to sea.

1) Wallsend Heddon 25.1 km
2) Heddon Corbridge 24.0 km
3) Corbridge Chester 18.4 km
4) Chester Vindolandia 26.4 km
5) Steel Rig Walton 29.0 km
6) Walton Carlisle 23.1 km
7) Carlisle Bowness 25.8 km

Our Wall
It was the year 122 after Christ, the Roman Empire was at its greatest expansion but in the most distant regions began to manifest itself of military difficulties, the Emperor Hadrian was therefore eager to restore order and, after a view in Britain, he ordered the construction of a wall to divide the wild Pitti tribes that inhabited today Scotland from the now civilized inhabitants of what is now England.
In just six years, under the leadership of the governor Plato Nepote, the soldiers of the three legions stationed on the island completed this grandiose work: a 120 km long coast-to-coast wall. about 3 meters wide at 3 to 6 meters high, with a deep moat to the north and a military road on the south side. The work was completed by 14 great forts, 73 minor fortifications (milecastle, one every Roman mile) and, between them, two observation towers.
The imperatre Antonino Pio built a similar project 160 kilometers further north and the Wall was partially abandoned, then in 164 AD Marcus Aurelius, given the impossibility of subdue Scotland, return the wall to its original function with a garrison of 10,000 auxiliary soldiers.
This fortification was the symbol of Rome's strength and grade and continued to be guarded even after the fall of the empire.
Today much remains and the wall has become one of the most popular and classic trekking routes of the British Isles.
From Machester we take the train to Newcastle, then continue by underground. We go down to Wallsend where there is a museum and a panoramic tower allows you to see from above Segedunum: the first of the great forts. In truth it remains little seen that here in the 800 there was a coal mine then replaced by a residential area.
We begin to walk along the river Tyne through Newcasle, there is no trace of those who were the most important shipyards of the British Empire, the river is deserted, the area has become residential, but the polluted is still evident.
At Heddon on the Wall we find the B & B we booked. It was not easy to organize the trekk: there are no hotels but a few and very small B & B, even fewer usable ones that must be close to the path and the right distance for a stage.
The village is not really small, has a couple of pubs and the only store is attached to a petrol station. Here we meet the first piece of 'Muro': a hundred meters in a green meadow.
The next day we faithfully follow the path of the vallo that remains under a road but we do not see why a thick hedge separates it from the grassy path. The countryside is cultivated, there are many pastures, we get acquainted with the countless 'kissing gates' which, on the border of the property, can not pass on to people but block the animals.
We have to reach the city of Corbrige, with its fort the most important Roman settlement.
Even here the only open shop is attached to a gas station.
Returning to the path of the wall, the landscape changes, becomes more undulating and less cultivated, left mainly to pasture.
At the end of the day the wall reappears, crossing for the last time the Tyne at the Roman bridge controlled by the great fort of Chesters.
There are no places to sleep, so they use the AD122 bus line (called as the year of construction of the vall that runs the tourist service along its entire track) reach the fort of Vindobala, pre-existing to the wall, and the hostel Once Brewed, a kind of great refuge frequented by hikers and cyclists, there is a kitchen where to prepare dinner and we have the opportunity to see the shocking dishes prepared by the locals.
In the morning, guests of the shuttle bus of a group of cyclists, we return to Chesters Fort and leave again.
Shortly after begins the most beautiful stretch of the route, the wall really exists, is well preserved (restored) and very long, mainly follows a hill bounded north by a rocky escarpment, and with numerous 'crag', deep gaps with fortifications for the control of the passage of people and goods.
Halfway through Housesteads Fort, Vercovicium for the Romans, on top of a hill.
The landscape is typical of the 'moorland' with peaty pastures, lakes, hills and some rare farms.
Reached Steel Rigg we go down to our hostel.
The next day the wall is even more impressive and the wild landscape, then arrive in Gilsland, the first country after 3 days, there is no longer the store where we thought to refuel, half of the houses are for sale, it seems an abandoned country .
We continue along the wall, always powerful and well preserved and we reach Birdoswald (Banna), the last fort turned into a museum. As we visit it, the typical English rain begins to fall. We continue slowly along the hill and then to Pike Hill we salute the wall and with the sun we descend towards Walton.
We stay in the only B & B, two rooms in a small elegant villa, the reception is very friendly, we have dinner in a large room with portraits of the ancestors (all military of the former empire) and full of family heirlooms.
The environment is again agricultural, up and down the hills between farms, cows and sheep, along the river Eden we reach Carlisle: a city with a castle and a cathedral, full of people and shops, but, at five in the afternoon , all disappear and we can hardly dine with 'fish and chips' in the only hot table left open.
It is the last day: we have to reach the Solway Firth and the sea. We are worried because the last 10 kilometers could be submerged by the tide, just in these days its cycle is at its maximum and even the time we pass will be the worst.
In this stretch, the wall is under the debris of the alluvial plain, but the path faithfully follows the route.
Arrived on the coast some signs warn that the water can reach one meter in height, but we are tranqullizzati seeing cows and sheep grazing at the edge of the beach.
The trek ends at Bowness on the top of a hill where it was another Roman fort.
We thought it was a seaside resort, but there are neither bathers nor boats, the fjord is so flat that at low tide the water moves tens of kilometers away.
From our room we can see the tidal wave that slowly but inexorably floods the whole bay.
This village is a storied place, border, for centuries the scene of the raids carried out by the Scotsmen who, on the way back, burdened by the booty, were sometimes surprised by the tide and disappeared into the sea.
At the beginning of the 20th century a railroad, then sunk, crossed the fjord, the Scots walked through it to come here where the spirits were cheaper, often while they came home drunk they fell into the sea and drowned. Even the parish priests were particular people: among the various countries it was customary to steal the bells.
The walk is over, in the morning a last relax on the beach, which here is a verdisiomo meadow covered with little pink flowers. Then bus, train, plane and back home.

Finita qualche giorno fa, divista in 4 giorni è stata davvero dura, sopratutto per il vento fortissimo proveniente da ovest che non ti dava tregua.
