Itinerary description
The climb uo to the Helderberg Dome starting at the Helderberg Nature reserve in Somerset West. The trail starts through the myraid of trails which split at the beginning. As long as you ascend you will be on a correct path to reach the jeep track. The standard Route follows the protea trail and then the pink route all the way up to the col where the trail splits left to the west peak and right to the dome (both can be achieved if you have enough time, and there is an alternative path down from the west peak). After the split to the right the trail follows a contour before a steep ascent up to the peak. There are some moderately exposed ledges where one has to keep their concentration and take it slow but these are manageable. The trail is a long one and your group night be pressed for time if some members are slower, keep this in mind and rather leave early. The mountain offers amazing sightings of birds, fynbos, dassies and the views are 360 and incredible.
