This hike to the highest peak, Pico de la Zarza, was one of the best hikes we did on Fuerteventura.

The peak is about 810 m high and offers you great views of the Jandia National Park and the west coast of Fuerteventura. The total ascent during this hike was about 1000 meter.

The most usual approach to reach the summit is to follow the 4x4 dirt road near Morro Jable, and take the same route back, which would be about 16-17 km in total.

Since it's rather boring to walk the same road twice, we started the hike north of Morro Jable in Esquinzo.

From Esquinzo we followed a dirt road into the Jandia National Park. After about 4 km the dirt road stops and there is no more visible trail, so from here you're completely off-road. You'll have to find your own way, climbing uphill to the mountain ridge.

The walk over the mountain ridge is very pleasant, the views of the National Park are amazing.

Once we reached the most northern part of the ridge, it became more difficult to walk/climb to the final summit, since the surface is quite rocky and steep.

The difference between the rather gradual increase in height during the approach of the peak, and the enormously steep cliffs on the other side of the peak is amazing to see.

The peak is fenced off, and you'll have to follow the fence until the entrance to the peak.

Although we did not meet anybody during our ascent to the peak, the peak was quite busy with people who were brought there by 4x4 vehicle, and who were walking back to Morro Jable via the same dirt road.

We also used this comfortable dirt track back to Morro Jable (Note that about 2 km from the summit, the map from Openstreetmap shows an alternative trail going left, but we were unable to find it).

When we arrived in Morro Jable, we walked back to Esquinzo over the beach along the sea, a very pleasurable end of this great hike!

This hike gets 5 out of 5 points from us!
