Itinerary description
A long and difficult hike to Slovenia's highest. The entire area is a massive limestone field that extends out kilometers in all directions. It's quite perplexing. And all better with such good weather which allowed us to see all the way down to the Adriatic sea.
We started from Dovje and went up through the Vrata Valley which is quite picturesque in my opinion as you see various peaks as you go higher up. We mainly stayed on the road until we got to the trail head.
There's not much to say on the trails as they're well marked. Maybe except where you get to the rocky area of the trail after the reaching the ridge of the valley. It's just rock so you gotta pay close attention to the markings. The other thing I will say is that, the way up was, as far as I've told, one of the most difficult ones. It has difficult via ferrata sections which make up a lot of the trail beforer reaching the hut. Then from there, climbing the summit base is mostly via ferrata. We were lucky with weather and snow as there was very little so no equipment was needed. But I do recommend good hiking shoes/boots as it's mostly rock that can be slippery and steep. It was definitely one of the most challenging hikes I've had given the steepness, elevation gain and the via ferrata.
Just before starting our ascent to the summit (after the hut), my phone shut off due to the cold and didn't notice so there's a big gap from that point to the summit in the recording.
We came back down via the Kot Valley. This one was not as steep and not much via ferrata needed so it makes descending a bit faster than if going back via the Vrata Valley. Here, we were able to get a ride back to Dovje after reaching the dirt road.
Loved the hike but it's definitely challenging and perhaps it's worth staying at one of the huts to make it easier and just enjoy the massive limestone towers surrounding this impressive peak.
