Itinerary description
Hiking - Loop in the pristine Maira Valley.
Near the start point, the Stroppia Waterfalls have a drop of 500 m (1,640 ft) and are the highest in Europe. Seasonal (summer) though, as they are fed by fusion of snow and ice.
The loop touches several glacial lakes and ponds still partially frozen, and usually requires (until the end of June) the crossing of snow patches on very steep slopes. Crampons required, otherwise strongly discouraged. Suitable to expert mountaineers only. Before attempting, stop by the Campo Base campsite near the start and ask for conditions.
Upon return, we reported what we found which is useful information to share.
The Sentiero Dino Icardi loop touches Bivacco Barenghi but we bypassed it due to worsening weather. Quite close, but unnecessary.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, all unmanned bivouacs could only be used only in case of emergency.
NOTE: The initial part of the descent from Infernetto Pass is quite difficult and suitable for experts only. This is valid even if there is no snow at all. The section is equipped with steel cables and ropes but not entirely, therefore making a couple of passages quite difficult and requiring extreme caution.
