Itinerary description
The easiest and most direct ascent to Ituren from the house is by taking the Ameztia school path down to the valley floor. This path leads down from the door of Zubialdea, the main farm at the entrance of Ameztia, and place of ‘official’ Ameztia reunions! It offers a direct ascent past several bordas (one that my neighbours remember as children that used to be the hiding place of Portuguese refugees during Franco’s time). The path heads downhill through a pine wood with glimpses of Ituren at every turn before arriving at the valley floor in the hamlet of Latsaga with its majestic 18th and 19th century houses. After a look around Ituren this walk offers an alternative and rugged ascent to Ameztia via a small stream valley directly behind the plaza.
This walk can be combined with the Ituren Village Tour (4 km) and the higher level Mendaur/Elgorriaga loop (17.8km)
In Ituren you will find several bars: the ostatua in the plaza and the sophisticated hotel, Tresenea, on the main road. The ostatua also offers good home-cooked lunches throughout the week, and the sophisticated and popular asador (grill house), also on the main road, offers excellent quality lunches and dinners at the weekend. There is a small shop and butchers at the west end of the village.
