Itinerary description
One of the greatest hiking trails in the Kazbegi area. This version of the trail is circular. The route starts from village Juta, reaches the Chaukhi Pass and then returns using the same trail. The whole trip will take around: 6-7 hours and is moderately difficult.
Be sure to take a good pair of hiking shoes/boots.
In about 20 min from the start, the trail reaches Zeta Camping which is a really nice place, offering dormitory rooms and tents for accommodation. Here you will find a very nice restaurant as well. Soon after Zeta Camping, you will reach another accommodation place, Fifth Season, which is one of the best places to stay in Georgia, because of the amazing view at Chaukhi Massif.
Soon after the Fifth Season, you will reach the junction at the river. One trail goes left and another one crosses the river and continues forward. Both of the trails are going in the correct direction, but it's much better to go forward and cross the river here (the river is wider here and usually there are bags with send in the river to make it easier to cross).
In about 30 min from this point, you will reach Chaukhi Lake, which is a nice place for a break and taking pictures. Here you will find a small cafe as well. Afterwards, you will reach the campsite, which is traditionally used by climbers as a basecamp.
From here the trail continues toward the pass. Be careful not to pass by a sharp climb to the left, which will take you to the top of the ridge on the left (another trail continues forward and you will also notice a serpentine, going up to the rocky slope, but don't take that one). From the ridge, the obvious trail continues forward and reaches the pass, offering amazing scenes all around the area. Use the same trail to go back to Juta.
On the way back, taking a long break in Fifth Season or Zeta Camp, will be a good idea.
