Itinerary description
This is my favourite camp site in Hong Kong.
Take the bus from Tung Ching MTR or Mui Wo ferry terminal in the direction of Tai O, but get off before Tai O at Shek Pik. The walk from here to the bottom of Lantau passes near several beaches. The first is by a village (Tai Long Wan Tsuen) and is a great beach but no camp site. The second beach has Tai Long Wan Camp Site - great for views of the sunrise. The third is my favourite, Kau Ling Chung Camp Site, sunset views, camping on grass or on sand, a stream with fresh clear water. This is where the map goes to. The easiest route back is to go back the same way.
If you go even further the path is more hilly, and eventually leads to Fan Lau Tung Wan beach which is very large and looks great from a distance, but tends to get a lot of rubbish washed up on it. After that is Fan Lau peninsula (the fort and the stone circle, and Fan Lau Tsuen - an abandoned village). Fan Lau Sai Wan is the beach next to Fan Lau Tsuen and looks very nice for camping although there is no offical camp site here.
For those who want a longer hike or a 2-day hike, the Lantau trail goes north from Fan Lau and eventually ends up in Tai O where there are busses back to Tung Chung or Mui Wo.
