Itinerary description
Nothing short of a classic in the Hordaland area of Norway, this walk takes you from apple orchards to eternal ice in 1300 vertical meters. The trail up there is a relic from the earliest cruise tourists visiting Norway in the late 1800`s. One particularly impressed German chap paid to pave the way, naming the path after the illustrious Kaiser Wilhelm II, most famous for starting the First World War. The trail itself snakes up the steep slopes towards the icy plateau of Folgefonna along 18 razor sharp hairpins. Make sure to soak up the view from the Gardshammar summer farm halfway. There`s an inviting bench facing fjord and valley, so there`s a really no excuse not to. The final stretch crosses a primeval alpine landscape, following a bedrock ridge that is surrounded on both sides by glacier ice. The Breidablik cabin, open to all and managed by the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) almost blends in with the landscape with its camouflage colors. I would definitely recommend this cabin over larger, more comfortable and also farther Fonnabu cabin: four beds, a small wood stove and magnificent views all around you. This place is the closest you can get to the best that Mother Nature has to offer.
