Itinerary description

The number one classic route in Sierra Guadarrama - a must to do! (this week we have managed the whole distance :-D and the weather was perfect!!)

Details of La Cuerda Larga:

09:20 Puerta de Navacerrada (1858m). Start of the route from the bus stop. You can reach it with local bus nr 691 to Valdesqui center, from Madrid Moncloa bus terminal. The first part of the route to Bola del Mundo goes south and later turns east. Route is done by concrete path with nice views to all the Guadarrama range and valley.

10:20 Bola del Mundo (2262m). Very strange contruction called 'Bola del Mundo' is just above the pass. It offers panoramic views in all directions (Segovia and Penarala to the north, all La Cuerda Larga route to the east, the pass to the west and even Cuatro Torres in Madrid to the south during a clear day). At this level most of the route is covered with snow and crampons are recommended at this time of the year. Still continuing to the east.

10:45 Cerro de Valdemartin (2282m). First peak on the route, the path is good and vissible regardless of snowy conditions.

11:25 Cabeza de Hierro Menor (2376m). The smaller of two "brothers".

11:50 Cabeza de Hierro Mayor (2381m). And the higher one, also the highest point of the route. Panoramic views even better than from Bola del Mundo!! At the end of the descent, snow cover ends too.

12:25 Pena de los Vaqueros (2233m). We continue east. The route starts to get "empty" as most of the hikers go only until Cabezas de Hierros.

13:10 Navahondilla (2234m) and Asomate de Hoyos (2242m).

14:00 Los Bailanderos (2133m).

15:00 Najarra (2123m). Last peak on the route. From here starts steep descent to the pass. Again we start to meet other hikers that came from the other side.

16:00 Puerta de la Morcuera (1777m). A small parking area next to local road M-611. End of hiking path and end of classic La Cuerda Larga. But we still need to get down to the village of Miraflores de la Sierra to catch the bus back to Madrid. From here we follow first a narrow path in the forest to the south and later local dirt roads to the east.

18:30 Miraflores de la Sierra (1133m). The route ends at the bus stop just before dark! With local bus nr 725 we go back to Plaza de Castilla bus terminal in Madrid.

Level difficult for the distance (including extra 10km to Miraflores!) and large part done with snow cover. Amazing views!!!
