La Palma: Fuencaliente - Vulcan Teneguia

Fascinerende rondwandeling door vulkaanlandschappen. Nabij het plaatsje Los Canarios (alias Fuencaliente) parkeren we bij het Centro Visitantes Volcan San Antonio (4 euro toegang), kijken even rond in het museum en gaan langs het afgebakende kraterpad tot aan de krater van de San Antonio vulkaan (laatste uitbarsting in de 17de eeuw).
Weer terug op de parking gaan we linksaf met het bewegwijzerde wandelpad GR131 richting Faro de Fuencaliente. We gaan via een slingerend steil pad van zwart vulkaangruis bergafwaarts en komen op een grindweg die we naar links volgen. Op dit vlakke pad is het gerieflijk wandelen en we genieten van prachtige uitzichten op de westkust.
Na een kwartiertje loopt een met rijen stenen gemarkeerd pad scherp rechts omlaag naar de Roque Teneguia, waar we afdalen naar een met betonplaten afgedekt waterkanaaltje. We volgen het kanaaltje tot aan een waterreservoir waar we naar een landweg afdalen.
Aan de splitsing wat verderop loopt een smal maar duidelijk paadje naar de vulkaan Teneguia. Het kronkelt over de smalle kam omhoog naar de krater die voor het laatst in 1971 uitbarste en waar het nu nog steeds naar zwavel stinkt. Het pad loopt over een smalle graat naar de top. (Waarschuwing: het pad is smal en onbeschermd, ga bij stormwind niet naar de top!).
We keren terug naar de wegsplitsing en volgen de grindweg naar rechts. Een goed kwartier (1,2km) verder komen we aan een wegkruising. We gaan naar links langs de met korte, dikke wit-rode paaltjes gemarkeerde landweg omhoog door de wijngaarden. Hogerop en verder van de vulkaan wordt het landschap wat groener en uiteindelijk bereiken we een verharde weg die we naar links volgen. We gaan rechts omheen het ommuurde Collegio Los Canarios en zien voor ons dan al snel de parking waar de wandeling begon.

Fascinating tour through volcanic landscapes. Near the town of Los Canarios (aka Fuencaliente) we park at the Centro Visitantes Volcan San Antonio (4 euro admission). We took a look around the museum and went along the demarcated path to the crater of the San Antonio volcano (last eruption in 17th century).
Back on the parking we choose left the signposted footpath GR131 direction Faro de Fuencaliente. We went downhill along a winding, steep path of black volcanic grit and reached a gravel road that we follow to the left. Walking this flat and comfortable path we enjoyed beautiful views of the west-coast.
After about fifteen minutes a path leads sharply to the right, down to the Roque Teneguia. Here we descended to a water canal covered with concrete plates. We followed the canal to a water reservoir where we descended to a country road. At the next junction runs down a narrow but well visible path to the volcano Teneguia. It winds over the narrow ridge up to the crater. Last eruption in 1971 and it still smells of sulfur. The trail runs along a narrow ridge to the summit. (Warning: narrow and unprotected path, do not go to the summit when stormy wind!).
We returned to the junction and followed the gravel road to the right. A good quarter of an hour (1.2 km) further we arrived to crossroads. We went left up through the vineyards along a path marked with short, thick, white-red poles. Higher and further from the volcano the landscape gets greener and finally we reached a paved road that we followed to the left. We went right around the walled Collegio Los Canarios and got soon back to the parking where the hike began.
