Itinerary description
La Fortaleza is one of the most important archeological sites in Gran Canaria and it was the last refuge of the local aborigines before the conquering of the island by the Castilians. It's close to the village of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, one of the most beautiful and authentic villages in the island.
This trail starts at Las Fortaleza Museum (http://www.lafortaleza.es/en/), where you can learn more about the archeological site and the life of the last aborigines.
Then you'll visit La Sorrueda dam, surrounded by beautiful palm groves and will take a small trail close to the right side of the dam. You'll got through some tunnels in the rock. Take care at the end of the first one. There's a little fall and a bad step might be dangerous.
At the end of the dam, the trail disappears. You must use the GPS in this area to find the trail again and head to the small village of Santa Lucía, where you can have lunch before taking the traditional trail to La Fortaleza.
Attention: Winter is the best season to hike in this area. Summer is too hot in the south of the island.
Please be respectful with the enviroment and enjoy it as much as we did! If you like this trail, share your experience in this page.
