Itinerary description

Beautiful long one-day trek. From Huaraz, take a bus (S./1 / USD 0.3cents) bus from the main market, direction to the town of "Marian". Look for the sign on the bus front or just ask.

After 20/30 minutes you arrive to Marian, which is a small town near the mountains. From there walk 13kms towards the Lake. You will pass the "Lazy Dog" eco lodge shortly after you leave Marian. The trail is uphill most of the time but not very steep or hard, and the landscapes are magnificent.

Since all together its about 26kms it is recommended to leave Huaraz pretty early.

Note: Elevation is wrong, the app tracked wrongly. Max elevation is 4400mts

Beautiful trek and I had it all to myself, the Lagoon too!

The lack of detailed information made this trek a bit frustrating to navigate in spite of it actually being pretty straightforward. So here is what I think people should know:

This is NOT an "easy" trek. I would rate it more as a "tough moderate". ALLTRAILS rates it as difficult. It will take you between 7 - 9 hrs there and back, if you are fairly fit. Be packed and ready for a long day and leave early enough to be able to enjoy some time at the lagoon and catch the last collectivo back to Huaraz at 6pm.

Take collectivo 15 to Marian, which is the end of the line and can be taken anywhere along the 14A, heading east (on the right side of the road if you are facing the white peaks, 2 soles as of Apr 2021). From there, you can walk a little less than an 1hr up the road to the trail head. My advice? Take a taxi to the trailhead (close to Lazy Dog Inn sign) and save your energy for an already long hike plus having to deal with aggressive dogs…

If you choose to walk, from the Lazy Dog Inn sign you have a 5-10 minute walk to the trailhead which is straight ahead of you when the road splits into a Y. The trail tries to re-join the road several times. Stay on the trail (1 - 1.5hrs) until it's obvious that there is no other choice but the road.

Once you have re-joined the road, walk until you see signs that shows you are entering the park. Right after crossing the gate, to the right, there is a path (several paths actually). Don't worry about taking the correct path, they all seem to lead to the same place, which is a steep uphill, back to the road. I recommend following the road until you cross the stream, with a big green valley in front of you. Start walking down the valley, staying to the left of the stream (no path in particular). The stream is fed by the lagoon, so you can't go wrong and it's way better than the road, which you don't have to go back onto despite some misinformation out there. When you are close to the lagoon, you will have a steep uphill climb to get to it. Again, no path necessary. The whole valley section is about 1hr or so.

Yurak Yaku café (@ The Lazy Dog Inn) is opened just a few months of the year, during the busy season, 11am to 4pm. Pack plenty of food and water (or water pump, as the opportunity to refill exists after a couple of hours into the hike) – I needed twice the water I would normally need for the same hike at lower altitudes.
