Itinerary description
Start at the church high above Lombada da Ponta do Sol. Climb up the traverse 20 m east of the church and continue up about 550 m along lanes including a steep shortcut to to meet the Levada Nova. Follow the levada to the left up the valley. The path is good but often vertiginous and unprotected. Continue up to the 200 m tunnel to come out in the bowl carved by the waterfall. Spectacular! The path carved out of the cliff passes behind the waterfall. This is the highlight of this hike. Continue along towards the
start of the levada. Take the steps on the switchbacks down to the lower Levada Moinho, the return route. This trail is rougher but less vertical and better protected. This trail is much improved from the negative descriptions in our 10 year old guide books.

Stunning scenery, a bit exposed in certain areas of the Levada Nova trail with rail guards.
Keep a look out when you change from the Levada Nova if you choose not to use the steps as you then have to cross a stream and end up in a picnic area. Shortly after this you have to go left and up a small set of steps which take you on to the Levada Moinho. From there it’s extremely easy to follow.
