Itinerary description
So, the typical route to the llanos is 2 hour round trip a d 6km long. This route I have done is a bit longer and takes you off the beaten track which I always think is more exciting and fun. There are a few gates to cross and on the last 15 minutes of uphill stretch before we get to the car parking area (which you can drive to abd start from there instead of from the bottom at Villaluenga) we had ro take a detour to avoid the flooded /muddy areas. This meant jumping over a fixed fence bordering the wide gravel path on the way up. The llanos or wide open valley is quite a sight so take a picnic and enjoy this spot.
Here’s a translation of the tourist boards description of the sendero /walk for you .
Route Length: 6.5 Km Remember, the route we took was double this length!
Duration (one way): 2 hours. We took 4 hours
Difficulty level: Medium
The Llano del Republicano is what is known as a "polje", a valley limestone in nature and large, elongated and closed by steep slopes. Water and time have been dissolving the limestone, giving rise to peculiar geological formations (known as "karst" formations).
This path runs for the most part on the track that opens in front of to you, it crosses a mountain of holm oaks, dotted with cork oaks, and It ends at the Llano del Republicario. Please be careful with the Road Traffic. When I leave the mountain, at the foot of the valley, a change in the landscape will assail you with the spectacular view of the Sierra de Libar.
The last part of the trail runs through the extensive plain and reaches the skirt of the Libar massif. There is another interesting formation carstica, the Sima del Republicano, a deep hole through which the water, acting as a natural drain of the valley. Enjoy your way and be respectful of the environment. There is loose cattle, do not forget to close the gates that it finds in its path.

There were crowds coming to Llanos del Republicano, but this extended hike was just perfect and we really enjoyed it. We didn't need to jump any fence, there were doors and also almost no mud. Thanks for sharing!
