Itinerary description
A walk or cycle ride on asphalt and gravel roads in pretty countryside between two rivers, the Rio Padron and Arroyo Cala. The main attraction in springtime is the sound of water and the smell of flowers. There are houses scattered along the route and cars using the road, so you don't feel truly lost in nature. But it is a route that is easy to access from Estepona, and so few are.
We took Calle Teniente Serra from Estepona, near Carrefour. This is a designated 'Puerta Verde' connecting Estepona with the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja. To be truly green you would have to walk a long way through unattractive campo before reaching nice walking country. We drove there!
We crossed over the autovia A7 then after nearly 1km turned left to go under the autopista. You then turn right to run alongside the motorway for 0.5km, then turn left where it is signposted camino atenasio. We parked on top of the hill (lomo de atenasio) to enjoy the view of the sea but you can continue further along the road and park where you like. There are many options for paths and roads around here, including circular routes that take in both rivers
