Itinerary description
This is a circular tour especially for those staying in Los Cancajos, who do not mind quite a bit of road walking and do not want to use a bus to get to the start or finish of the tour.
I started it from my hotel Las Olas in Los Cancajos by walking up the hill out of the resort towards Santa Cruz. Just after a viewpoint area on the right I took a set of steps on the left-hand side next to a house. There is another opening here which is not the right way.
The path is called Calle del Socorro; it crosses the main road between Santa Cruz and the airport and then crosses LP2, which leads to Fuencaliente. Near some residential accommodation are some drago trees. The path then climbs up to meet LP204; this path has lots of loose scree and is probably easier to climb up than down.
Shortly after joining the LP204 you enter the road leading to the Parador hotel and the path actually goes round the back of the hotel. There are a couple of blazes on a pillar at the entrance indicating the path.
You reach a road, turn left up a road, which eventually becomes a path. Just before the LP202 is the cross of Las Ledas . You then cross the LP202 and pick up Camino Las Ledas; along here is the Cruz del Centro.
Where the route reaches the LP301 should be the Cruz de la Pavona and somehow I did not see it! The route then follows the main road for a while before turning off to the left and going through an area of vegetation. You pass the Municipal Cementery and eventually reach Brena mountain. I took the footpath to climb up to the mirador. The slope at the top where the path meets the road is steep with loose scree, so the last couple of yards are a scramble. After that it was nice to walk the tarmac road to the summit. This was definitely the highlight of the tour for me.
The paths descending from the area near the mountain are narrow with lots of loose small rocks, so I found the going very slow. Towards the end of the path it became paved with slabs of rock. Where this path meets the LP202 the way is to the left and up on a path by a house on the other side of the road.
In San Jose at a bend in the road is an interesting mural on the side of house.
From the Calle de la Polvacera I found a short cut back to Los Cancajos, though I did take a wrong turn. The road is quite steep, twists and turns but finally meets the main road, where you can cross and take the road into the resort.
