Itinerary description
This is a very straightforward out-and-back tour – navigation is simple as you follow a path with boundary stones on either side and some of them have red/white blazes. Wherever meet a junction you will see a sign showing you the way.
I started recording the tour from the bus station and found Calle de los Volcanes without too much trouble. The path leading down to the lighthouse starts off this street. Whilst navigation is straightforward, I found the initial path to be very challenging. It is quite steep with a surface of volcanic gravel, so it is quite easy to slide. I think it took me forty minutes for a descent of 1 kilometre.
Eventually, the path brought me to a wide and flat gravel track for cars so I was able to increase my speed on this part.
I was surprised that it was so windy there. Of course, there is no shade so you have to bear that in mind. There are also no cafes or toilets that I could see down by the lighthouse. There is a granite cross to the right of the lighthouse, but not much else to see otherwise. Despite this, hundreds of people make this pilgrimage to the lighthouse.
Coming back up, I found it took me about 45 minutes until I reached the flat of the car gravel track. I managed to climb up the lava path in 30 minutes and found it was then another 15 minutes to the bus station.
At the bus station there is a tourist information office and on the other side of the street a cafe.
