Itinerary description

A route showing an overland visit to Victoria Settlement, Port Essington, Northern Territory, Australia. This is an alternative method to reach this historical settlement. A boat can be used from Black Point but only in settled weather. Ludwig Leichardt & his surviving explorers arrived here overland on the 17 December 1845 after nearly 5000 kilometeres from Southern Queensland. They became the first people to reach the Northern Territory & the North coast of Australia - overland - from the Southern Colonies. Only a few years later Leichhardt disappeared in Central Australia & the settlement at Port Essington was abandoned.
This is a site of great cultural & historical signifigance
This was a combined mountain bike - bush walking trip.
There is no phone reception & no water. Take minimum 10 litres water per person.
From the junction it is approx 33 kilometers of good unsealed road. It does not get used much so there are very little corrugations or sand - good for mountain bike. Allow 3 hours
The walk in is approx 8 kilometers - flat country with sparse shade. Allow 3 hours.
It is recomended to overnight at the settlement.
