Itinerary description
Estimate: 18km, +1.300m, -1.100m without the Levada at km 15.9 to 21.9
This estimate is probably more realistic than the altitude components measured by my smartphone GPS.
Please find the tracks of the other days by searching Wikiloc for "Madeira Feb2016" or in my own comment below (you will see it in the classical PC view, not in the mobile view).
Start 8:40. End 18:20. Including lunch break at Curral das Freiras and the side trip to the Levada. In the morning, I walked swiftly and arrived at Curral das Freiras at lunch time.
Km -1.4. Hotel.
Km -1.4 to 0.0. Walking on the road. I did not catch the GPS signal directly when leaving the hotel.
Km 0.0 to 9.1. Here we are on Madeira's hiking trail PR12. At www.visitmadeira.pt you can see the actual status of that trail at "Useful info > Walks > Notice ... List ...".
Km 8.1, waypoint with photo. Water. Look's like a kind of spring.
Km 11.8. Here I saw a restaurant, but did not enter.
Km 11.8 to 12.4. Walking on the side road.
Km 12.4 to 14.3. Walking on the main road.
(Km 14.3 to 14.6.) My smartphone GPS registered 300 phantom metres inside the lunch break restaurant.
(Km 14.6 to 15.0.) To the post box and back.
Km 15.9 = km 21.9. Here you can start the uphil walk to the hotel.
(Km 15.9 to 21.9. I walked down the street until the Levada do Curral e Castelejo at km 16.9. This Levada leads to Funchal, so it was a possible option for the next day. However, when preparing this vacation, I learned it is a difficult walk. So, on this "day 4", I walked two kilometres along this nevada, to check what it is like. I decided it is a too dangerous option for "day 5").
Km 21.9. Slow uphill walk. In the second half, the magnific views include sights of the old road further to the east (on your right when looking down).
Km 23.5. Hotel.

hi,
Thank you for sharing your route.
we are interested in your route but with a variation...would you go all the way from pico ruivo to encumeada and from there to curral das freiras in one day? It seems to be doable in 26km aprox...any place to camp/sleep in curral?
Regards
Hola "manguera",
I live in Barcelona and in all my life I have spent only those 9 days in Madeira.
No, I didn't see any accomodation or camp ground in Curral. Bus 81 starts at Lombo Châo (SouthSW downriver from Curral), daily until after 20:30h and brings you to Funchal: www.horariosdofunchal.pt/carreiras/81.pdf
Perhaps you thought aboutsleeping at Pico Ruivo the night before? Google Maps shows "Paul do Mar Aparthotel" about 1 or 2 km west of Pico Ruivo. This is a seaside ("Mar") hotel and completly wrong on the map (Paul do Mar is a village at the coast).
If you switch the Wikiloc map to "Other maps > OpenStreetMap", you see a path from Pico do Jorge via Pico Grande to my Waypoint at Boca do Cerro (km 9, not labeled on the map) and another path, further to the east, to the northern end of road ER107.The mountain hut "Casa do Ruivo" is not for sleeping!
I think you ask about the following route: Pico Ruivo (km0, 1950m), Pico do Jorge (km6, 1700m), Boca da Encumeada (km10,1000m), Bridge (km14, 950m), Boca do Cerro (km19, 1300m), bus 81 stop "Fajâ Escura-Final" (Google Map, km22, 650m), River (600m), Curral das Freiras (km26, 600m). The 26km are doable, but it is at last -1700m of downhill walking (maybe -2000m measured by GPS): in the morning, -1000m from Pico Ruivo (1950m) to the bridge (950m); then uphill; then -700m from Boca do Cerro (1300m) to Curral (600m). Think about your knees :-) especially if you carry heavy camping equipment.
You could shortcut along the trails you see in OpenStreetMap: km12.8 to km16.8 of the following route http://ca.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=11249529 or km9 to km14 of this route http://ca.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=2907201 which, however, seems to be technical and includes +/-900m (GPS) on the following section allone: http://ca.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=1295239
