Itinerary description

A very good circular walk starting in Valldemossa but with an "off-piste" section in the middle - so you need to be confident to navigate and follow the wikiloc track. We took the #203 bus from Palma bus station and got off at Valldemossa. The trail starts 300m from the bus station but the first section is not recorded; from the bus stop go left on Carrer Rector Joan Mir and turn right at the sports area/football field onto Carrer Bartomeu Ferra; keep straight - the road becomes Carrer Joan Fuster. Then go left onto Carrer de los Olivares; the recorded trail starts to the left of the gate at the end of this street. The trail is all on public land and is easy to follow until you get to the charcoal burning pit - where I missed my originally planned route because the path at that point is difficult to spot!! By the time I realised we were too high, instead of retracing our steps to the charcoal pit I decided to do a "cross-country" route which worked very well and actually made a fantastic loop - the ridge section is spectacular in this direction - and then we retraced our steps to the start point.

Unless you have a permit to go through the private property, you need to go through the alternative gate on your right. In fact the non-private route is much nicer, with better views, and is only slightly further in distance.

Charcoal pit

Here we missed the main path which is to the left and slightly downhill of the charcoal pit; it's easy to miss because it is below the charcoal pit and to the left. It is marked with cairns (we noticed them on the way back but completely missed them on the way there because we were looking at the charcoal pit). Anyway, if you follow the wiki track it's actually a nice route and you will return later to the charcoal pit. Always keep to a sensible contour and avoid any of the steep rocky gullies.
