My first hike in Spain and what a great introduction. A beautiful hike through the mountains on a twenty degree Celsius January day. The first section from Maro to El Pinnarilo park is fairly easy. Continue through the park and then the up and down begins. Follow the GR 249 posts with the parallel white and red stripes. If the stripes are crossed in an “X” it means wrong way.
The hike is really quiet, only the sound of bees and birds, and magnificent views around every corner. The trail mostly stays on top of the hills, especially the second half. The paths are overall good, a lot of it is gravel or small rocks. Since it is a lot of up and down people with bad knees etc will likely have problems, but the trail itself is not technically difficult.
It took me almost six hours to get to Frigiliana, and I didn’t take long breaks so plan accordingly. If doing in summer bring massive amounts of water since there is nowhere along the way to fill up. Perhaps the first creek but I don’t know if it runs in the summer or the water quality.
Frigiliana is a great town, and you can catch the bus or a taxi to Nerja.
