Itinerary description
Today’s goal was to hike in a circle around Masada in order to catch some views and angles that we usually don’t get to see.
We hiked up the black trail of the Ele'azar Ascent and reached the plateau of Mount Ele'azar, from where we had a perfect southern view over Mount Masada on the opposite side. From there we hiked down to the Nahal Masada stream until we met the ancient Roman Siege Ramp, on which we climbed up to the Masada plateau.
Once on top of Masada, we revisited some of the places that we usually don’t see so often when we guide our groups there.
We then walked down the ramp again and hiked the so-called Runner's Trail (Shvil HaRatz), which hooks around Masada from the North to the East. The views of King Herod the Great's ancient fortress from this angle were breathtaking and surprising, as this had actually been the first time ever for me to hike this path.
After covering some 10 km (6 mi) in 7 hours, we reached the parking lot again, from where we began our return journey to Jerusalem and then back to Tel Aviv.
