Itinerary description
Masons Falls Circuit is a 15km, grade 3 Circuit hike located in Kinglake National Park Victoria. About 1hr and 15mins from Melbourne.
The hike should take approximately 4.5hrs to 5hrs to complete.
I parked my car at Masons Falls Picnic Area, clean toilets located here before the big hike.
Walking down through the picnic area follow sign to Masons Falls, then you will got another sign “Lyrebird Circuit” turn left at the sign to Masons Fall Lookout Platform 500m.
The viewing platform look out is spectacular. Once you have taken some photos of the falls you will come to a set of stairs with the sign ‘Running Creek Track’. This is a good incline for warm up. Highly recommend hiking poles at this point if you need extra knee and ankle stability, bit rockey.
You will then approach a fork with two signs. Turn sharp left at the fork to ‘Wallaby Trail Link’. This will make your circuit go in a clockwise direction which after much research this was highly recommended from other hikers, rather than going anticlockwise which makes the circuit more difficult best for experienced hikers with a 7km steep ascent to Mount Sugarloaf.
Follow ‘Wallaby Trail Link’ and cross over road, to the next sign which says ‘mount Sugarloaf Ridge Track’ for 3km. There is quiet a lot of over growth, trail hasn’t been maintain so would advise long sleeve and long pants at this point as I had to bushbash for a bit, and climb over fallen trees and logs.
You will then reach top of Mount Sugarloaf, with views of the city. Go to end of the road bend and follow road just for a little bit before reconnecting to the “Running Creek Trail”. This is steep descent, was a bit slippery with loose rocks and recent rain, hiking poles helped.
Once you get down the bottom you will reach “The Tyrest” sign on the right and the creek on the left. the temperature dropped a lot here so having a windproof jacket of some sort helped to keep warm.
Continue trail until you reach The next sign “Hazel Glade” this marks 2.8km to Mason Falls” This is where the incline back up started. Was able to have a little break at “Fern Nook” before another big climb back up to Masons Falls Platform.
Great circuit enjoyed the challenge for a moderate fitness level hiker.
This Masons Falls Circuit is a pleasant hike through the regenerating bush that clearly shows the impact of the Kinglake fires. There are large parts of the track that did seem to escape the tragic fires. Plus the Masons Falls are quite spectacular, and worth the visit.
