Itinerary description
There are a number of ways of accessing Mermaid mountain but this is probably the quickest that does not involve private property. The hike does climb Mermaid Mountain and also visits Little Mermaid Lookout which looks over Lake Manchester to the west and Brisbane City to the East.
The hike starts from Lake Manchester Rd just above the junction of Lightline Rd and Lake Manchester Rd. The local residents have an issue with using a gazetted public road so just pop up the road and take the track in there to Lightline road.
From Lightline Rd you follow to Mermaid Mountain Break turnoff. You then follow Mermaid Mountain Break up up up to Mermaid Mountain. Leave it in no doubt this is one of the steepest tracks you can do in Diagular. At times the track gets so steep you need to move up the bush on the sides to get a grip. You know you are at the end when you reach a gate. Now you are on top of Mermaid Mountain.
From here you follow the peak of the ridge across the mountain all the way to Little Mermaid Lookout. This lookout is spectacular and gives fantastic views across Lake Manchester towards Horse mountain.
After descending back to the main track from Little Mermaid you take a right of. A little track that eventually turns into a firetrail. This firetrail follows down Cameron creek crossing over it at the end.
The conclusion requires taking a few twists and turns in the tracks prior to returning to Lake Manchester Rd just up the road from where you started. A short walk back up the road will leave you back to the start.
Very enjoyable quite physical track with plenty of good views.

The steep, relentless hills on this trail are challenging, either going up or down. Having said that, they are totally worth it, as the views are fantastic
