Itinerary description
At only 3 kms from the sea the Pico Pienzu is the highest point in Europe at this distance from the sea. Throughout the whole walk there are outstanding views of the Picos de Europa and the Asturian coastline. Asturcon ponies (the native Asturian horse) roam freely in this protected area, there is a colony of griffin vultures, and fallow deer are normally visible from the summit on the north side of this mountain range. The first part of the walk to Bustaco is very easy with little ascent, and very lovely. From this point on there is quite a steep climb, and at times this part of the walk can be hot, but it is well worth getting to the cross and saving some energy for the observation of fallow deer on the north side of the summit.
