Itinerary description
This hiking tour in Upper Alentejo near the Spanish border, focus on the magnificent open dry region around Monsaraz, one of the most beautiful and well preserved fortified Portuguese small towns. The points of interest are many, ranging from history to architecture, megalithic structures or agriculture.
Along the way, burning under the ruthless summer heat, you will find cromlechs, menhirs, and very rustic farms, which make you feel literally pushed back to some very remote past. Of course, the lack of human activity adds to this sense of displacement and mystery. Beware the Indian fig opuntia cactuses that grow along the road. Without the use of thick gloves, you will certainly pay a high price for the venture of plucking, peeling and eating its tasty and succulent green-yellow-redish fruit.
This is a lonesome easy trail. But do remember to drink a lot if you do it during summer.

Really enjoyed this trail, especially after first couple of miles. Beautiful countryside and views, so much more authentic than driving to the menhirs. Found a couple of fields fenced off; the first we could detour, the second we climbed through. Many thanks from UK visitors. Feb 2021.
