Itinerary description
A short walk up the road to join the well signed GR5 to follow red/white markers. We leave the GR5 behind to cross a wide, but dry riverbed before rising steeply to the Col du Chaberton in the shadow of Mont Chaberton. The side of the mountain is littered with military debris – gate houses, observation points, barbed wire, cables, etc. The gradient eases on longer switchbacks to lead us to the wide flat summit.
Cloud was rising on the Italian side (south east shoulder) obscuring the views over Italy. We hoped the clouds would lift further to open up the views, so took our time and spent a 3 hours on summit exploring the military buildings.
Superb day out today and really pleased we decided to come. We didn’t really know what to expect and were surprised at the sheer size of the military site which was extensive. No technical difficulties involved. Good paths with mostly gentle gradients to the summit when following switchbacks - there are lots of short cut paths available but these increase the gradient involved.

Chaberton is a must for the region.
I recommend to start early as it can be very busy during peak days.
