Itinerary description

A spectacular route from El Portillo Alto to Montaña Arenas Negras and Montaña Guamaso. I left Sendero 2 to descend to the TF24 to the start of the Montaña Guamaso circuit. My map showed a secondary path here although this was not visible on the ground. As I emerged onto the roadside opposite the Montaña Guamaso parking area, I was stopped by a National Park ranger who warned me in no uncertain terms that I could be fined for leaving the official path. If you want to follow this walk without leaving the official trails, it will be necessary to descend to the Siete Cañadas Trail and head towards the road junction at El Portillo to pick up the Montaña Guamaso circuit. I parked at the Bamby restaurant where is plenty of space.

Thank you for posting your routes, which I always enjoy browsing (and sometimes walking). I believe the NP Ranger was misinformed. The official park maps show a green zone labelled "Zona de Uso Moderado" (Moderate Use Zone) in which it is "recommended" to stay on the trail, but not mandatory. In the other zones it is mandatory. The map is here, and it shows the area to the north of Sendero 2 to be in the green zone:

However, if I had an encounter with a ranger I don't think my Spanish would be good enough to argue the case.

Hi, sorry, I don't appear to have received a notification that you had posted a comment on this route so I have only just noticed it. My Spanish is very basic but the ranger spoke very clearly so I could understand him. I would not have argued with the him even had my language skills been better as he had a very officious manner and I have no doubt that he would have pursued the matter further given any encouragement. Thanks for the link, I'll have a closer look and familiarise myself with the different zones. All the best.
