Itinerary description
Montaña La Muda is a beautiful volcano on the northern part of Fuerteventura. It’s overseeing Tindaya and can, on a clear day, offer views of Betancuria massif, Lobos island and Lanzarote. Although it’s one of the easiest hikes around, with (in my opinion) some of the most fascinating views, it remains quite unknown and rarely visited.
Montaña La Muda’s peak is quite high for the Fuerteventura standards and reaches 675 m. It’s also not the easiest to climb, especially in windy conditions, which are common. It’s exposed and in case you’re prone to vertigo, you should definitely avoid it. Using ropes is advised. The below described route doesn’t go all the way to the top but ends at the plateau, called ‘Las mesas’ (= ‘the Tables’) under the summit. The hike up to there is really easy, kids and dogs friendly, and already offers amazing views, as well as an insight into Majorero history along the way.
After leaving a car on an easy-to-find parking along the main road Tindaya - Puerto del Rosario (just before Matilla, FV-10), the trail begins with a couple of stairs and an info board with some basic information about the hike. We learn about the three water springs (Fuente del Pozo or del Risco, Fuente de la Pila and Fuente del Pocito), so very important for the old inhabitants, that they cultivated them into small fountains. We’ll be able to see them along the way, together with some other stone structures, used by the shepards for protection, for washing and drying their clothes, and for graining weeds.
The trail is easy to follow and even offers a small picnic site with a stone bbq. In case you’re stopping there, make sure you’re not leaving any trash behind.
After reaching the plateau, you’ll have the peak on the right side, and lots of wide open space on your left. Feel free to roam in that direction and explore more of Las Mesas. There are some great stone plates a bit further to the left, too!
