Itinerary description

This walk climbs up to the rim of the crater on Montana Rosa, walks clockwise round the crater, then drops to the coast and follows the coast path round to the start. We started the walk at the Natura Palace Hotel, in Playa Blanca, but you could pick it up anywhere along the route.

The terrain isn't too difficult if you wear sensible footwear. We used walking shoes, and they were perfectly adequate. We each used a single walking pole to help with the slightly loose surface on parts of the descent. The only likely problem is wind. I estimate it was gusting 40-45 mph in 2 or 3 places when we did it, which required a bit of care.

Just beyond the geodesic marker, a large white drum shaped lump of concrete, the path splits for a short way. Shortly after the paths rejoin, look for a left turn on to a narrower path. This path leads down the side of the mountain and eventually to a roundabout on the road. Take the road opposite, Calle Rusia, at the far end of which is another roundabout. Go straight on again, onto what was an unfinished road when we walked it. Follow this all the way to the coast.

Turn left at the end of the unfinished road, onto the coastal path, and follow it beyond the lighthouse until you come to a left turn, just before the Natura Palace Hotel. Take this and turn right at the top onto the Calle Lanzarote, which takes you back to the start.
