Itinerary description

Monte del estado al Pilón

This is a beautiful trail to enjoy. Always take necessary precautions. You should always carry First aid kit (small well equip one), compass & map of the area, cell phone, flashlight, knife, fire striker or lighter/matches, whistle, and plenty of snacks, some food (i prefer MRE or any type of meal ready to eat "just add hot water type") and around 7-8 water bottles (3,500-4,000ml). Good hiking boots, No sneakers (the sole won't hang for long and won't prevent you from damaging your ankles), long sleeve shirt and a normal t-shirt plus a good long pant that holds rough use (lots of brush and thorns).

These are two different trails that were put together in a single track. The first one is very nasty and the second one (leading to el pilon) is much better. Ask someone to drop you off at el monte del estado, departamento de recursos naturales. There is no one in charge, so don't expect to see someone and point out directions. Seek for the area where the electrical service station and follow the trail ahead. First ull find a Y division (take right), second u'll find a fork ( either go straight or turn right "go straight").
Be advise these trails are not maintained and are not market as hiking trails. These are old service roads that were used or made for intended use. You should expect anything along the way. So it's better for people above 13 years old, that are in shape or that tolerate heavy exercise, since the terrain is very bad (lots of rocks and slippery parts). Most of it is down hill, so no strenuous exercise will be done except a lot of strain on the knees (especially if carrying a heavy backpack). Once you get to the river then everything is much easier and pleasant since a lot of people have been going and the trail is somewhat maintained. Hope you enjoy and as always whatever you take with you in goes with you out, don't litter, take care of what's left of our island. Happy hiking.

Up date for these trail on Jan 28 , 2018 (after hurricane Irma and Maria) the trail is fairly good a bit harder to complete so the technical difficulty has been raised from moderate to difficult (mostly because now there are alot of fallen trees in which a machete, hand saw, or big knife must be used in certain parts) and there are a couple of landslides have occured.
