Itinerary description
HOWEVER, IT'S WORTH IT!
Cheam is the best viewing spot for the upper Fraser River Valley, and provides great views of the North Cascades from the north. The hike itself is short at under 5km (3 miles) one way to the top on a great, easily-followed trail that switchbacks through lush green meadows gently up the south-aspect (sunny!) side of Cheam. The top is at 2112 metres or 6929 feet, with an elevation gain of just 665m, or 2175 feet (very little for the awesome view...on a clear day). An average roundtrip for the 10km hike is 4 to 4 1/2 hours.
Waypoints
Summit
The views are dramatic and the drop-off to the north down toward the Fraser River is striking.
Narrow Ridge
After passing a nice viewpoint to the south and west, the trail turns east along the ridge to the summit.
Final Climb
Turning back north and west away from Lady Peak, her steep far side comes into view as the trail continues gradually in the open and sometimes through the woods to snake its way to the final summit ridge.
Above Spoon Lake
The trail ascends now more steeply toward Lady Peak, an imposing edifice that gets more scary the more you see of her.
Spoon Lake
An eminently swimmable pond, Spoon Lake in places is deep enough to jump or dive into. And yes, it is cold, circa 12-15 degrees C in mid-August.
Parking Lot to Spoon Lake
After clambering over the barrier at the east end of the parking lot, it is a gentle road along and up to Spoon Lake.
