Itinerary description

The track starts at the generous car park which we can get following Google Maps directions. The parking is pretty decent although this mountain seems to be extremely popular and it can get quite busy. I can understand why, it is very close and accessible to Kaikoura, the track is fairly easy and the views are extraordinary.

The first two-thirds of the track, until you get to the hut, you'll follow a 4WD track. It's fairly easy but quite steep. Actually, the slope is fairly constant, at about 17%, all the way from the start to the summit.
Quite soon after the start you will start enjoying great views, not only of Kaikoura and the coast side but also of the beautiful valley and the Seaward Kaikoura Range on your left-hand side. The higher you get the better the views will get as well.

After a couple of kilometres from the start you will find some picnic tables. Also a signpost that says the official track ends here. No need to worry since the 4WD track keeps going as easy as before until reaching the Mount Fyffe hut.

Two kilometres after passing the picnic tables you will find a bench to enjoy the magnificent views of the Seaward Kaikoura Range. Another bench with views is located 500 meters further up.
There are waypoints in the track gps for both benches and also for the spot with the picnic tables.

One kilometre after passing the second bench you will arrive at a flat area where you'll encounter the Mount Fyffe hut. Here there is a toilet and also another bench with, once again, great views, this time of Kaikoura peninsula and the coastline.

From the hut onwards, the last third of the ascent, the track is not a 4WD track anymore. It is still quite wide for the most part of it apart from some sections where it narrows down to a regular one-person track.

After a few more minutes of climbing and enjoying the views right and left we arrive at the Mount Fyffe summit where the views are the best of all. At the summit there is also another bench facing the coastline to make it easier to enjoy the views.
Don't forget to turn around to enjoy the views of the majestic 2000 meters peaks on the Seaward Kaikoura range.

In summary, easy track, quite steep and superb views left and right.
