Itinerary description

This hike circumnavigates Mount Maxwell in the provincial park of the same name. It offers splendid views over the channel separating Salt Spring Island from Vancouver Island

The outbound leg follows a ridge with wonderful views over Samsun Narrows to Vancouver Island. The best views are from Baynes Peak, the summit. From there you can see as far north as Maple Bay on Vancouver Island to the San Juan Islands (USA) in the south. At the summint, you will find picnic tables and toilets.

The inbound leg does not offer views but is through a beautiful coastal forest of fir and cedar trees.

The trails are well maintained and marked with directional signs at intersections and markers on trees.

The advantage of the route of this hike is that it is uphill at the start when you have the most energy and downhill on the way back when you have the least. The disadvantage is the restricted parking. Alternately, you could follow the road to its end, at Baynes Peak, where there is lots of parking and start from there.

There are pit toilets at the Baynes Peak parking lot.

The Retreads Hiking Club gives this hike an AVA rating of 4C.
