Itinerary description

The First Part of Our 2-Day Trek to Mount Olympus' Highest Peak (Mytikas Peak: 2,917 meters)

August 6, 2023
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
We embarked on the initial phase of our two-day journey to the summit of Mount Olympus, with our sights set on the highest peak, Mytikas at 2,917 meters.

Our starting point was Prionia, located at the parking lot of the Prionia Refuge (Ph01). The day greeted us with abundant sunshine and cloudless sky, accompanied by pleasant weather conditions – temperatures ranging from 22°C to 24°C, rendering the environment comfortably warm. Our ascent from Prionia commenced at 6:30 p.m. Our objective was to reach the Spilios Agapitos Refuge (Ph06), where we had secured two beds for the forthcoming night.

We successfully accomplished an ascent of 1,050 meters, covering a distance of approximately 6.4 kilometers. This achievement was realized within a span of 2 hours and 15 minutes, during which no breaks or rests were taken. The path was notably well-defined and exceptionally well-marked, rendering the possibility of losing one's way nearly non-existent. It's important to acknowledge that our trek commenced as the sun was descending, a factor that affected our timing. Undertaking the trek during morning hours or in the early to mid-afternoon would necessitate an additional 1 hour and 45 minutes – under similar seasonal conditions. Additionally, it's worth noting that there's typically a fountain available at approximately one-third of the path's length. However, the water flow isn't always guaranteed. Fortunately, we were wise in procuring all the necessary water at the Prionia fountain, at the starting point of the trek.

***Important to note***: we carried a 60-meter rope, four carabiners, climbing helmets, and harnesses, all in preparation for the summit climb. Ultimately, after a careful evaluation of the circumstances, we found that the rope was unnecessary for the ascent. However, it's imperative to be well-versed in mountain conditions. Particularly, the last 1 hour and 30 minutes of the ascent to the peak traverse exceedingly slippery rocks on a 50-degree slope.

We emphasize the necessity of comprehending the level of ascent required to conquer the peak. Underestimating the challenge would be unwise.
