Itinerary description
Mt Barney Traverse is one of the classic routes over the mountain and traverses its skyline from east to west. Normally the route ascends Logan's Ridge to east peak, crosses the saddle at Rum Jungle, then up to West Peak. Descends the south face of West Peak across Barney Spur to descend Savages Ridge. The traverse of Barney Spur, from west peak to the top of Savages ridge, is a premium Barney experience an in my opinion rates as one of the best on Barney.
On this hike there was heavy rain the night before and cold 60km/hr westerly winds forecasted all day. Our original plan was to walk Barney Skyline (Eagles-SE Ridges). However, due to the weather we opted for a slightly easier day. Due to the wet rock we completed the route in reverse as it would let Logans dry out during the morning.
Savages Ridge is all off track with little to no trail and moderate scrub to negotiate. However, navigation is easy once the ridge is found as soon as you cross Egan Creek on the fire trail from Yellow Pinch. Good views of Mt Barney from the south are available most of the way up Savages. At the top of Savages there is a spectacular traverse across a narrow ridge to gain the base of West Peak giving great views in all directions. West peak can be gained with a step vegetated scramble and an exposed top gully climb. There is good foot and hand holds up the gully and a rope is not necessary. However, if any of your party has an aversion to heights this route should be avoided. There is not many places to protect with ropes unless you have trad gear to build an anchor. The 60km/hr wind up our clacker made the climb even more interesting.
The easiest route off west peak to Rum Jungle is to walk 100m north until you see obvious terraces which flow down and back to the south east. A direct route can be utilised directly down the ridge to Rum Jungle with difficulty. The rest of the journey up to east peak and down Logans can be easily found on my other walks or in guide books.
