Itinerary description
One of the most scenic ways to climb Mt Greville is via the Waterfall Gorge route up and the Palm Gorge route down. In my view Waterfall is the best route up because it ends at the lookout across Moogerah Dam and presents the climber with a rest stop on the way up when you are most tired.
The route from the lookout across to the top via the base of the cliffs is also spectacular and more interesting than the route up to the top from Palm Gorge.
The Mt Greville climb starts from the car park on the southern side of the mountain which comes off a very good dirt road. From the car park you proceed up to the split of tracks. The track that precedes to the right is the Waterfall Gorge track which proceeds up the mountain before eventually veering right into the gorge.
Waterfall Gorge does have a number of sections which require minor climbs and also includes a number of points edging over small drops. At about two-thirds of the way up the gorge you reach a point where the gorge will split and you must take the left-hand side of the split to continue up the mountain.
At the top of the gorge the track well eventually edge to the right away from the gorge and then proceed through a narrow track to the bare rock slab which gives great views across to the north eastern side of the mountain.
After a break you head back a little bit and then proceed up to the base of the cliffs that formulate the next section. Following the base of the cliffs you eventually then follow the trail up sticking to the side of the cliffs. There are a couple of rock scrambles in this section.
Eventually the track will level off and then proceed laterally across to the Palm Gorge track. The track then precedes up to the pile of rocks which marks the top of Mt Greville. There is a lookout to the left of the pile of rocks which looks out towards the escarpment of main range.
The conclusion of a hike precedes down the Palm Gorge track until you reach the top of Palm Gorge where there is another track going to the left which takes you to the ridge route. By proceeding right you enter Palm Gorge and then you follow a sometimes indistinct track amongst the palm trees down the mountain.
At the base of Palm Gorge you will reach more in distinct track which will disappear amongst the bushes and lantana at the base of the gorge and past a rock slide and fence line before returning you back to the car park you started at.
All up a short sharp route that usually takes between 3 1/2 and 4 hours for the advanced hiker.
