Itinerary description
This hike climbs both the major peaks of Mt May (839m high) from a clockwise direction ascending via the northern ridge, then descending via the south-west ridge and back along the road to the campsite. The track follows a heavily eroded track up the northern ridge with occasional loose rock and scrambling. There are a couple of areas on the way up in the upper reaches of the first peak which will require a little rock climbing.
The final ascent to the first peak is then an easy walk through a grassy area to a large bare rock area to the top. You then descend this peak down a narrow rock path to an area which requires you to edge across a narrow ledge before you can descend into a saddle between the peaks. This narrow ledge is across an area of a small drop. Although a little scary most people can accomplish this quite easy.
From there the track ascends by a track up the second peak to an area which provides fantastic views towards Mt Barney. The track then continues back along the path up to a junction in the track and then proceeds down a rocky spur to meet up with the 4WD section of Waterfall Creek Road. The rocky spur does have some small cliffs and scree slopes.
Watch out for the chimney just after the track junction. It can be a doozy.
Just before you hit the campground where you would have started don't forget to do a short walk up a creek to a Waterhole that is fantastic for an after walk swim. This is not on the tracking.
