Itinerary description
This challenging hike takes you along the south west facing side of Mt. Tzouhalem offering great views of Cowichan Bay Estuary, the city of Duncan and the hills of the Cowichan Valley beyond. During this early spring hike the views were obscured by cloud but the forest in its many shades of green was alive with Fawn Lilies, Shooting Stars and other wildflowers. You will traverse trails that are well maintained but can be rooty and rocky in spots. The lower area of the outbound leg is forested by Arbutus and rare Gary Oak trees. As you ascend the forest changes to a mix of young Douglas Fir. The outbound leg is a constant climb with a roller coaster profile and lots of twists and turns. While the inbound leg is more of a smooth descent.
The summit is at the site of a controversial cross, since removed, and offers spectacular panoramic views. Down below is Providence Farm, once owned by the Sisters of St. Anne who legend says at Easter would make the steep climb from the farm up to this spot.
The trails of the Mt. Tzouhalem system are laid out like spaghetti on a plate, fortunately there is good signage to guide you. It is shared by hikers and mountain bikers so beware when hiking especially on weekends.
There are toilets at the trailhead.
The Retreads Hiking Club gives this hike an American Volksports Association rating of 3C.
