Itinerary description
There are many ways to do Northbrook Gorge but most of them require you to do a car shuffle or do a back and forward the same way you came route. This route combines the physicality of Cattleman's break up Northbrook Mountain to the pinnacle of rock that overlooks the southern side of Northbrook mountain with the beauty of Northbrook Gorge and the lower sections of it's creek.
The start of this hike just up the road from White Cedar car park where Cattlemans break joins with Northbrook Parkway. After Crossing Northbrook Creek the track begins it's steep descent up Northbrook mountain. The track here is through firetrail through increasingly danse eucalypt abd grasstree forest.
Eventually you will come 2A Junction where Cattlemans Break turns into Lawnton Road. A little bit further on you come to a junction at a water tank towards the campground along England Creek Road. You follow past the campsite and then can you on to the lookout at Northbrook Mountain.
Returning back the way we came we took a little shortcut down to Lawnton Road along a disused track. From Lawnton Road we proceeded down Northbrook Mountain to get to the little track comes off that goes towards Eagle's Nest. In party is this track was marked with a pile of rocks or tape. Neither were present when we were there and I suggest you please close attention to the track.
Following the track down awards Eagle's Nest you will eventually come to a junction to another little track that goes off to the right. Ignore this and proceed straight up Eagle's Nest. This is steep and you may have to use your hands a bit to help your progression forwards.
Eventually you'll get to the southern side of Eagle's Nest and to progress forward you need to get out the other side looking for the narrow track that descends Eagle's Nest play stick to the track as March. For some reason Google Maps has a track that goes directly down to the gorge however this has many steep rope abseil components.
The track now slowly winds down from Eagle's Nest until it hits a very old FireTrail. National Parks have a little signpost here to keep you going straight down to Northbrook creek.
From now on there is no correct route as you just follow Northbrook Creek down through the gorge and then out the other side. You now follow the creek all the way back so the start point; rock hopping, swimming and just enjoying the creek. You can pop out to the road at various stages to quicken your return along the way.
Overall a very physical day but a lot of fun which I would not recommend to do in wet weather. Doing the climb in the early hours of the morning is the smart way to do things.
