Flåm is a town of the municipality of Aurland, in the province of Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. It is situated at the end of the Aurlandsfjord, which is itself an arm of the Sognefjord, which stretches more than 100 miles inland from the sea. Since Norway's fjords have depths of up to 4000 feet, even large modern cruise ships can sail inland to picturesque towns like Flam. It has a population of about 350 inhabitants.

Flam is often listed as a cruise ship port of call because of the Flam Railway, which rises nearly 3,000 feet up the mountains to Myrdal, where it connects to the Bergen-Oslo railway. The train ride from Flam to Myrdal takes about an hour and includes 20 tunnels and panoramic views of the Norwegian mountains.

Our tour began with a trip on the Flam railway, followed by a second train to Voss. After lunch and time to explore Voss, we return to the ship by bus. It was a great way to see this part of Norway.

The town of Flåm has been a popular tourist destination since the late 19th century. It currently receives approximately 450,000 visitors a year. The main attractions include the boat trip through the fjords and the Flåmsbana, a train that runs the 20 kilometers between Flåm and Myrdal, being one of the railways with the greatest unevenness in the world (including several spirals in its route).

Access by car to Flåm can be done by the European route E16 that connects Oslo and Bergen.
The Flåm Train has been voted one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, and is one of Norway's top tourist attractions. The train runs from the end of the Aurlandsfjord, a tributary of the Sognefjord, towards the high mountains, where the Myrdal station is located. The journey shows the best of the stunning scenery of western Norway.

Over the course of a single hour, the train will take you from Flåm, located at sea level by the Sogn Fjord, to the top of Myrdal mountain station, 867 meters above sea level. Myrdal is also one of the stops on the Bergen railway, which allows the connection between the Flåm Train and the trains on the line that run between Oslo and Bergen.

The Flåm Railway is one of the steepest normal gauge railway lines in the world, with a 5.5% gradient for 80% of the journey. The train travels through a spectacular landscape that allows you to see the Route of the Camineros, vertiginous slopes and roaring waterfalls, as well as passing through 20 tunnels, and offers so many vantage points that, for many people, a single round trip is not enough .

National Geographic Traveler magazine has chosen the Flåm Train as one of the ten best train journeys in Europe and, in 2014, L

You'll be able to see rivers running through vast gorges, waterfalls plunging down the slopes of steep mountains with snow-capped peaks, and even mountainous agricultural areas set on dizzying rugged terrain.

The Flåm train makes a photo stop at the beautiful Kjosfossen waterfall. The winding tunnels through the mountains are truly a sight to behold, the result of the most daring and meticulous engineering work in the history of Norwegian railway lines.

The Flåm train in figures:
20 km train ride
20 years to complete the construction of the railway line
20 tunnels, 18 of them built by hand
11 stations along the road
5.5 percent maximum incline
In 1940 the test trips with small steam locomotives began
