Itinerary description
Starting from the bottom the Numinbah Valley this hike follows part of the Gold Coast Great Walk track that extends up to the Woonoongoora walkers Camp and then on to Apple Tree Carpark. The hike returns the same way as it comes up. The lower sections of the hike are in the Conservation Park area of the Numinbah valley.
The hike consists of about 900 stairs up and about 3 creek crossings across Waterfall Creek which at various times may require you to get your feet wet. Most of the track is quite wide with a number of narrower sections in the steeper climb areas.
At most times of the year there are leeches on the track. Most of the terrain is Eucalypt Forest which in the lower sections is congested by lantana and weeds.
The section from The Walkers camp up to Appletree is quite steep and that is where the majority of the stairs are. The stairs are a recent addition and are mainy the fake concrete stairs that the majority of tracks seem to have these days.
The final section up to Appletree includes a number of switchbacks up through the cliffs that extend towards the top of the Springbrook Plateau. Appletree has toilets and a picnic area where you need to watch out for the crocodile.
All up a great walk for the relatively fit hiker. I really enjoyed the final section up to Appletree through the beautiful country before the plateau. The top of the hike has views across to the Beachmont area and around to the back end of the Ship Stern circuit, Turtle rock and the track up to Binna Burra.
