Itinerary description
This is a hike from Fairy Meadows to Rakhiot base camp via Beyal camp. One of the most popular treks in Pakistan. The trek offers absolutely stunning views of Fairy Meadows pine forests, the Rakhiot glacier, and Nanga Parbat. It can be classified as difficult due to its length (about 20 km), altitude (from ~3221 to ~4114 m), and elevation gain (about 1000m). At the same time, it is not a technical route and it is easy to navigate there. Fairy Meadows was used as a campsite by multiple German expeditions to Nanga Parbat.
The route consists of the following parts:
1) P-01 - P-13. Hike throughout the pine forest of Fairy Meadows. At P-09 you will reach the Beyal camp which is a pasture with multiple streams, cows, huts, and small shops. At P-13 you will reach a viewpoint with an amazing view of the Rakhiot glacier
2) P-13 - P-18. A route along the Rakhiot glacier. You will have to cross strong streams coming from the glacier at P-15, P-34 (recorded it on the way back), and P-16. During a day these streams are becoming stronger since the ice is melting and feeding the streams. There are boards that can help you there, but you have to be ready to wet your feet.
3) P-18 - P-33. Base camp and peaks around. You will reach the Base camp at P-20. After that we made a loop summiting a peak next to the base camp for better view and extra challenge. The loop part P-20 - P-33 is mainly done off trek and closer to P-28 we already walked on the snow. It was the highest altitude for this route 4114 m according to my Garmin watch.
Shorter options:
1) I saw that many people reach only the viewpoint at P-13 and do not continue.
2) You can reach the base camp at P-20 and do not go for a loop P-20 - P-33.
Gear.
The gear varies significantly depending on the season and weather conditions.
My trip was in end of June with about 20C in Fairy Meadows and 5C on peaks near the base camp. I would say must-have items are the following:
1) Proper high-cut hiking shoes
2) 2 liters of water to reach the base camp, electrolytes, food
3) proper wind breaker, fleece
4) sunscreen cream (there is no shade after P-21)
I would also recommend to have the following extra stuff if the weather become worse:
1) gloves
2) extra fleece and/or warm base layer
3) warm hat
