Ojén – Ermita La Virgencita
This is a linear route, all uphill to get to La Virgencita shrine hidden in the hills of the Sierra de las Nieves in Ojén.
I wasn’t a big fan of the circular Sendero La Virgencita SL-A28, especially the beginning, so I decided to do a linear version using the return part of the sendero. I found this more scenic even though it’s linear.
Starting from the lower car park (there is always parking), head past the town hall and then go around the church – Iglesia de Ntra. Sra. de la Encarnación, which is usually open in the mornings and is worth a look inside.
Then you pass the Chorros fountain and into Calle Cuevas, where you eventually pass some interesting caves. Going up some steps, crossover the main road and take the ramp on your right, part of the GR 243 and GR 249.
Eventually you will come to a post where you turn left, passing a gate and going through a dark angled tunnel of about 180m long approximately, (you will need a torch of your phone light. Also after rains I can imagine this tunnel being wet).
Once you get through the tunnel you are in lovely woodlands with a wide variety of trees and bushes. There was nice dappled shade and also a nice breeze.
Getting to the shrine is well signposted. The shrine is under a rock face and is gated.
From here retrace your step back the way you came.
Shade was about 50%.
Back in the main square you can try one of these three bars that are usually open all day
Bar Al-Andalus
Taberna el Portero
Bar Calabazo
