Itinerary description
Many hikes start from Orient, and it is easy to understand: the surroundings are incredibly beautiful.
Orient is accessible only by a winding road which connects Bunyola and Alaró. Some of the house in the small village are from the 14th and 15th century which give visitors a good impression of what Mallorcan settlements looked like 600 years ago. Despite its remoteness, Palma is only a 45-minute car journey away.
We chose to hike to Alaro for lunch in the charming little square Place de Cabrit i Bassa.
The ascent uphill is quite steep, but the beautiful view is worth all the heavy steps.
About two-thirds of the hike leads on a bumpy, paved road.
The square of “Cabrit and Bassa” is the nerve center of the neighborhood called “dels Damunts”, which formed the urban center of primitive Alaró, already referenced since the 13th century.
History tells, that it was in this square that Cabrit and Bassa, heroic defenders of the Alaró castle, were cruelly executed by king Alfons II of Aragon because they fought for the kingdom of Mallorca.
In the center of the square there is an octagonal water cistern, that for many years served the population.
